SAM Worthington might look like a Hollywood hunk but the Rockingham boy was a bit of a flannel-shirt-wearing "bogan", say his former schoolmates.
And Worthington, the star of new James Cameron 3D epic Avatar, which opens next month, always had star quality -- being judged "gifted" and accepted into a drama course at Fremantle's John Curtin Senior High School (now John Curtin College of the Arts).

Joe Galie and Sam Morgan, former Pioneer Athletic Conference (PAC-10) football Defensive Players of the Year have taken their talents to nearby Ursinus College and are making a significant impact on the Bears' program.
Galie, a former Phoenixville Area High School star, is now a junior linebacker for the Bears while Morgan, a former Owen J. Roberts standout from Chester Springs, is now a freshman defensive end.
Galie ranks second on the club in tackles with 41, including 28 solo hits and 13 assists.

Dixie Heights saved perhaps its best game for the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs.
The Colonels stonewalled Ashland's usually potent running game and the fifth-ranked Tomcats matched their regular-season total with six turnovers in a 41-14 defeat Friday night at Putnam Stadium.
"I think we've been looking for that all year, said Dixie Heights coach Tom Spritzky, whose team came in with a 4-6 record.

Raceland survived a fourth quarter rally to defeat Lynn Camp 19-13 Friday in the opening round of the Class A playoffs.
The Wildcats stopped Raceland on a fourth down play to get the ball back on their own 43 with 3:30 remaining in the game.
After nine plays, the Wildcats had managed to move the ball down to the Rams 25 with 30 seconds to play when Raceland's defense made a season-saving play.
Both teams played hard for 48 minutes. That is what the state playoffs are all about -Randy Vanderhoof

"After we scored the first goal, we started playing kind of lazy," Alvarez said.
"Next thing you know they get two goals and it was finally a wake-up call.
