Their shirts were red, skirts were white and lips were stained blue from a snow cone. But more than just looking patriotic, cousins Isabel Boley, 3, of Washington and Abby Nelson, 6, of Germantown Hills were eager for the fireworks to begin. "I like when it's booming," said Abby. "And I like all the colors."

The early morning workouts don't seem to be bothering the Purdue women's basketball freshmen. "The 6 a.m.'s aren't a big deal," said South Dakota native Sam Ostarello, who is joined by classmates K.K. Houser and Ashley Wilson. "Back home, we had workouts at 6:30. It's not that big of an adjustment, other than the intensity of it."

It was Friday afternoon and Cocoa still needed a bath. He'd get a trim and a new hairstyle, too, before the day was through. After four hours with a bottle of "Man 'O War" shampoo, some industrial-sized clippers and a vision, Cocoa's owner, Debbie Hahn, would have him looking like new.

To understand Bill Vickers, maybe one first should know that he's a cabinetmaker and owns his own shop, Serendipity Woods. It might explain his detail-oriented nature and why he agonizes over the spending and budgeting papers of the Pueblo West Metropolitan District, just as he does for his own business. Don't be surprised if you drive by Troy's Alparon Park on any given Tuesday or Thursday evening and see a group of young hunters locked, loaded and ready to fire. They're members of the Troy Youth Sportsmen Club's Pennsylvania Youth Hunter Education Challenge, and in the coming weeks, you're apt to see them practicing for an upcoming international competition. "It's a great time to come out and actually see kids handling firearms safely," said Jeff Castle, Troy Junior Sportsmen Club president.

Pitching and defense win games, as the Cubs proved Friday in a 2-1 walk-off victory in 10 innings, their second consecutive win to open a crucial four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. But manager Lou Piniella is tired of missing the hitting. That's why the lineup will change today, with Alfonso Soriano expected to move from the leadoff spot and rookie Sam Fuld likely to step in against Brewers right-hander Braden Looper.

A red card for their leading try-scorer David Howell killed off Quins' hopes just with just half an hour played last night. The visitors had given themselves a toehold in the match through a Matt Gafa try after the Warriors raced to a 14-0 lead. But any chance of a comeback disappeared along with Howell, who became the first player sent off in Super League this season for his high shot which flattened Sam Tomkins.
